God and the Sacred Liturgy
It seems that there is a misunderstanding that is prevalent throughout the Catholic world, that Liturgy is something that the church makes up to give worship to God. This idea has never been part of the church teaching; rather we receive the liturgy from divine origins.

What is the most profound origin of the liturgy?

“The liturgy comes from God, in whom there is an eternal, heavenly banquet of love – the joy of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Because God is love, he would like to let us participate in the feast of his joy and to grant us his blessings.

Our Earthly liturgies must be celebrations full of beauty and power: Feasts of the Father who created us—that is why the gifts of the earth play such a great part: the bread, the wine, oil and light, incense, sacred music, splendid colours.” (Youcat # 179)

Pope Benedict writes: “The liturgy is entering into the liturgy of the heavens that has always been taking place. …It is not the case that you think something up and then sing it; instead, the song comes to you from the angels.” Advent Retreat

Tom's purpose is initially to retrieve his son's body. However, in a combination of grief and homage to his son, Tom decides to journey on this path of pilgrims.
