Saying Goodbye and Good Luck

Fr. Victor has just arrived from Tanzania, Africa, and he will be staying here with us while he gets acquainted with Montreal. Feast of St Anthony January 17
Saint Anthony, the celebrated father of monasticism, was born in Egypt around the year250. After his parents died he distributed his property to the poor and, beginning a life of penance, withdrew into solitude. He attracted disciples and labored on behalf of the Church, giving support to believers during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian and assisting Saint Athanasius against the Arians (those who denied the divinity of Christ). He died in 356.

Poverty as a virtue
Many people ask why anyone would choose to give up all material wealth. From the beginning of the church 2000 years ago there have been men and woman who have felt called to this radical way of life. Christ himself lived a materially poor life and counseled others to give everything they had to the poor and to follow him (Mt 6: 20 and Mt 19:16-21)
Why does Jesus ask this of his disciples? How is poverty a virtue? It allows the disciple to live in freedom, not being possessed by their possessions. It is a way where one is focused on relationships and perfecting oneself in charity.

“The human heart is constantly seeking good things that will make it happy; but if it seeks them from creatures, it will never be satisfied, no matter how many it acquires. If it seeks God alone, God will satisfy all its desires. The happiest people are the saints because they desire and seek only God.”
