Saint Paul of Verdun (Bishop † c. 647)
Celebrated on Wednesday February 8th
A native of Autun, France, Paul was devout from his childhood, making it his habit to give to the poor everything beyond what he needed to sustain himself. He left his native land to find a place of solitude where he could devote himself to God as a hermit. Paul settled first on a mountain (later named Paulsberg) near, Trier, Germany. In this settling he made great spiritual progress, but soon found that, despite his isolation, his piety was becoming known and admired. Seeking to escape this adulation, he entered the German Monastery of Tholey. As a monastic student, he showed a remarkable capacity for learning that led to his becoming the abbey’s most gifted professor in both sacred and secular studies. In 630 Paul was consecrated bishop of Verdun, France. Finding the diocese spiritually and materially impoverished, he set about to restore his see (parish), governing with holiness and wisdom. Among his objectives was the restoration of the fitting celebration of the sacred liturgy at the cathedral church of Verdun. Paul’s prayer wrought numerous miracles both during his life and after his death.
Let us pray that the renewal St Paul accomplished in Verdun, France can be accomplished here in Verdun. Montreal
